Icelandic Language Courses

The aim of Icelandic courses is not only to meet ministerial requirements but also to help foreigners to acclimatize or settle in Iceland.

Students learn to use Icelandic in everyday situations as well as to translate simple texts using a dictionary and to apply grammar rules that are clearly explained during the classes.

This course is composed of 60/30 teaching hours and is designed for students who do not speak Icelandic at all. The main focus is on learning language structures through practicing four main language skills listening, writing, reading and speaking, according to adequate vocabulary. Using simple texts about ordinary life helps to enrich the vocabulary. Simple sentences help to practice Icelandic pronounciation; moreover, four main skills are practiced to help students to communicate in a daily life. At the end of the course students can talk about their personal information, work, hobbies; they also should communicate in present, future and past tenses by using simple sentences. Students know the alphabet, numbers, days of the week and months.

The course is composed of 60/30 teaching hours and it is the continuation of the first course, based on expanding vocabularyfrom everyday life and work. The aim of this course is to teach students how to communicate at public places, such as: shop, bank, restaurant, post office, etc.. What is more, it is important to practice conversations. Teaching methods are based on developing four language skills., with a huge emphasis on pronunciation ang adjustingvocabulary to students’ needs and interests. At the end of the course students can talk about their personal information, work, hobbies; and things which they know very well.

This course is composed of 60/30 teaching hours and is meant for students with the knowledge of Icelandic at the pre- intermediate level, which means they are able to make themselves understandable about family life, feelings and work. During the course sudents continue to discuss daily life matters and their jobs to develop vocabulary and practice pronunciation. They also practice the vocabulary connected to house renting and buying. The stress is put on introducing them to the customs and habits of Icelandic society. They also introduce their counrty of origin. By combining the four language skills and providing daily life based assignments students are trained to keep up the conversation, express their opinions, and make themselves as understandable as possible.

The course is composed of 60/30 teaching hours and is meant for students with the knowledge of Icelandic at the intermediate level. The stress is put on getting deeper knowledge and understanding of the Icelandic vocabulary connected to daily life, different professions and occupations, relationships at work, applying for jobs, job interview, paying the bills, etc. social matters are still being stressed toghether with the mass media to develop students language skills when using the Icelandic geography or discussing students’ eperience in Iceland compared to their home country, the four skills are combined withe the stress on writing. The assignments are close to the real life situations to practice keeping up the conversations and making oneself understandable.

The course includes conversations once a week for 3×40 minutes

Áfanginn er ætlaður byrjendum í íslensku. Lögð er áhersla á að kynna nemendum uppbyggingu tungumálsins með hlustun, lestri, frásögn og samræðum eftir því sem orðaforðinn leyfir. Unnið er með auðvelda texta sem tengjast daglegu lífi til að auka orðaforða nemenda og þjálfa framburð. Lögd er áhersla á að fjölbreyttum aðferðum í tungumálakennslu skuli beitt.

Áfanginn er ætlaður þeim sem hafa nokkra undirstöðu í íslensku. Haldið er áfram að vinna með þá þætti sem tengjast daglegu lífi og starfi einstaklingsins til að auka orðaforða nemanda. Lögð er áhersla á að nemendur geti gert sig skiljanlega í verslun, bakaríi, banka, póshusi og veitingahúsi og tekið þátt í einföldum samræðum um dagleg málefni, svo sem veður og áhugaml. Eins og áður er lögð áhersla á að kynna nemendum uppbyggingu tungumálsins með hlustun, lestri, ritun, frásögn og samræðum. Haldið áfram að þjálfa íslensk hljóð og framburð. Fjölbreyttum kennsluaðferðum í tungumálakennslu beitt. Leitast er við að gera verkefnin þannig úr garði að þau reyni á hæfni nemandans við raunverulegar aðstæður.

Áfanginn er ætlaður þeim sem hafa þó nokkra undirstöðu í íslensku og geta gert sig skiljanlega um fjölskylduhagi, liðan sína og starf. Haldið er áfram að fjalla um þætti sem tengjast daglegu lífi og starfi til að auka orðaforða nemanda og þjálfa framburð. Einnig er þjálfaður orðaforði sem tengist leigu á húsnæði og húsnæðiskaupum. Lögð er áhersla á að kynna íslenskt samfélag fyrir nemendum með það fyrir augum að þeir verði meðvitaðir um þá siði og þær venjur sem hér tíðkast. Þeir þjálfast eining á að kynna sitt heimaland, siði og venjur. Fjölbreyttum kennsluaðferðum í tungumálakennslu beitt. Leitast er við að gera verkefnin þannig úr garði að þau reyni á hæfni nemandans við raunverulegar aðstæður og þjálfi nemandann í að geta haldið uppi samræðum og gert sig sem best skiljanlega á íslensku. Íslenska IV: Áfanginn miðast við þarfir þeirra sem hafa nokkuð góða undirstöðu í tungumálinu. Fjallað er um þætti sem tengjast daglegu lífi og þörfum fjölskyldu. Áhersla er lögd á að efla orðskilning nemenda tengdan ýmsum störfum, samskiptum á vinnustað, atvinnuumsóknum, atvinnuviðtölum og launaseðlum. Áfram er lögð áhersla á íslenskt samfélag og fjölmiðla með það fyrir augum að auka færni nemenda í tungumálinu og efla sjálfstraust þeirra og samfélagslega vitund. Fjallað um mannleg samskipti, virðingu og umgengi. Íslensk landafræði lítillega kynnt og nemendur segja frá reynsu sinni af ferðalögum um Ísland og önnur lönd. Leitast er við að gera verkefninn þanning úr garði að þau reyni á hæfni nemandans við raunverulagar aðstæður og þjálfi nemandann í að geta haldið uppi samræðum og gert sig sem best skiljanlega á íslensku.

Námskeiðið er 30 kennslustundir. Kennt er tvisvar í viku, 2x 40 mín. í einu. Lögð er áhersla á að kynna orðaforða daglegs lífs ásamt undirstöðu atriðum í málfræði. Eftir námskeiðið eiga nemendur að geta skilið og notal algeng orð og orðasambönd daglegs máls. Nemendur eiga að geta gefið upplýsingar um sig td um það hvar þeir búa, vinna osfr. Einnig eiga þeir að geta spurt aðra um sömu hluti.

Námskeiðið er 30 kennslustundir og er framhald af Enslu 1. Áfram er lögð áhersla á orðaforða daglegs lífs, td orðaforða sem tengist persónulegum upplýsingum ásamt einfaldri málfræði. Nemendur eiga að geta tjáð sig um einföld atriði um sitt nánasta umhverfi og atvinnu.

Polish language courses for Icelanders

The course is conducted using the communicative method, which places the main emphasis on developing speaking skills. All lessons, including those at a complete beginner’s level, are held in Polish. This method produces results surprisingly quickly – which greatly increases students’ motivation. Conversations are practiced from the earliest stages of learning through carefully designed exercises, such as: simulations, role-playing, and language games and fun. We use proven textbooks that are popular among students. Additionally, our teachers supplement the textbook with their own, interesting materials.

We also offer courses in the above-mentioned languages. We offer general language courses (developing all language skills), exam courses – preparing you for exams (e.g. TOEFL), conversations (courses developing especially the ability to speak, discuss, argue – with rich lexical material), grammar (the main emphasis is placed on grammar exercises), specialist courses for various professional groups, “Business English” courses – developing all language skills in the context of business language/work environment.

Group courses

We offer to all those who want to sign up for fixed schedule classes held 1-2 times a week for 80 minutes. The course is designed for people who want to develop language skills necessary to communicate in all situations of everyday and professional life.

Using various teaching methods and techniques, we develop all four language skills: writing, reading, speaking and listening comprehension. We teach fluency and correct way of communication and develop our students’ vocabulary.

We teach not only “to speak”, but also – how to speak. We take care of linguistic diligence, correct pronunciation and the use of appropriate grammatical structures. Grammar is to be a tool for building sentences and statements and create a sense of “security” in using the language.

Individual courses are the fastest and most intensive way to improve your language skills. Such lessons are entirely determined by the needs of the student. The individual course is adapted to the level and skills of the student.

Lessons are usually held once a week for 80 minutes or twice a week for 60 minutes. This type of course is perfect both as a stand-alone course and as a supplement to another course.

Language Levels Description

Below is a description of the individual levels of advancement, selected individually depending on the student’s current skills. At the end of each semester, an internal exam is organized, based on which the teacher issues a report on the progress of learning. At the end of the school year, after passing the final test, the student receives a certificate of completion of the course at a given level of advancement.

This course is for people with little or no knowledge in English and is meant to prepare students for English 1/A1. On the course students learn vocabulary and basic grammar.

At the end of this level, you will be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases.
  • Introduce yourself and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details (e.g., where you live, people you know, and things you have).
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
